What is the Gospel?

The word “gospel” means “good news.” But to understand the good news, we must first understand the bad news.

The Bad News

We Are All Sinners

The Bible tells us that “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). Sin is anything we think, say, or do that breaks God’s law. We have all lied, stolen, lusted, been selfish, and rebelled against God in countless ways.

Sin Separates Us from God

Our sin has separated us from God. “your iniquities have separated between you and your God” (Isaiah 59:2). Because God is holy and just, He cannot simply overlook our sin. The penalty for sin is death—eternal separation from God in hell (Romans 6:23).

We Cannot Save Ourselves

No amount of good works, religious activity, or moral improvement can save us. “Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight” (Romans 3:20). We are spiritually dead in our sins and unable to save ourselves (Ephesians 2:1).

The Good News

God Loves Us

Despite our sin, God loves us with an everlasting love. “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). God doesn’t love us because we’re good—He loves us because He is good.

Jesus Died for Our Sins

God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to die on the cross in our place. Jesus lived a perfect, sinless life and then took the punishment we deserved. “Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree” (1 Peter 2:24). On the cross, Jesus satisfied God’s justice and made a way for us to be forgiven.

Jesus Rose from the Dead

Three days after His death, Jesus rose from the dead, proving that He had conquered sin and death. “Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification” (Romans 4:25). Because Jesus lives, we can have eternal life.

Salvation is a Free Gift

Salvation cannot be earned—it is a free gift from God. “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9).

How Can I Be Saved?

Repent of Your Sins

Repentance means turning away from your sin and turning to God. It’s a change of mind that leads to a change of direction. “Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out” (Acts 3:19).

Believe in Jesus Christ

You must believe that Jesus is the Son of God, that He died for your sins, and that He rose from the dead. “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved” (Acts 16:31). This is not just intellectual agreement—it’s trusting in Jesus alone for your salvation.

Confess Jesus as Lord

“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved” (Romans 10:9). To confess Jesus as Lord means to submit your life to His authority and follow Him as your King.

What Happens When I’m Saved?

You Are Forgiven

All your sins—past, present, and future—are forgiven. “In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins” (Ephesians 1:7).

You Receive Eternal Life

You are given eternal life as a free gift. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).

You Become a Child of God

You are adopted into God’s family. “But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name” (John 1:12).

You Are Made New

God gives you a new heart and a new nature. “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new” (2 Corinthians 5:17).

Will You Trust Jesus Today?

If you have never trusted in Jesus Christ for salvation, we urge you to do so today. “behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation” (2 Corinthians 6:2).

You can pray something like this:

“God, I know that I am a sinner and that I deserve Your judgment. I believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross for my sins and rose from the dead. I turn from my sins and trust in Jesus alone to save me. Please forgive me and make me Your child. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
